Enclosers

Setting Up the Enclosure:

  • Choose a suitable enclosure, such as a small glass or plastic terrarium with a secure lid in the front or side of the encloser. Avoid getting terrariums with a “Top” lid. Jumping spider make small nests or “pup tents” not open webs. They build these at the tops of there enclosers near the light. If you have a top open terrarium, you may disturb there nest and it can be stressful and difficult for them to have to continue to rebuild there homes.

  • Provide plenty of ventilation while ensuring that the ventilation holes are small enough to prevent the spider from escaping. These holes should create cross ventilation to prevent suffocation and maintain humidity.

  • Add substrate such as coconut fiber or peat moss to help hold moister. However, these types of humidity holders can produce mold and will need to be changes frequently.

  • Decorate the enclosure with branches, leaves, or other natural elements to mimic the spider's natural habitat.

  • You will need to lightly mist the encloser once a day. This is how your spider will drink and maintain humidity levels. Dehydration is a big issue with spiders if not properly maintained. Do not add a water dish to the terrarium, Spiders lungs are underneath there bodies and can easily drown, so just a mist on the side of one wall of the encloser will work just fine.

  • Have fun decorating your terrariums with things for your spider to jump and climb on. Place things high in the encloser, because this is where they hangout most of the time.

  • Keep a LED desk lamp by your encloser so that the light can come in from the top. This is comforting to the spider and helps them be able to tell when it is day, or night. Turn your light on in the morning and off at night so they can keep track of the natural light cycles.

  • You do not need a warmer for your jumping spider. These can cause there homes to get to hot or burn you spider. Keeping them at a comfortable 72-76 degrees is appropriate.

  • You may need a smaller encloser for cleaning or maintenance days. Carefully transfer your spider to a small simple encloser so you can remove any food remains, extra webbing, (do not remove there nest) or any other cleaning that may need to be done. That way they don’t get stressed out or escape while you are working on there home.

    Care and Maintenance:

  • Keep the enclosure clean by removing any uneaten prey or waste regularly.

  • Monitor the temperature and humidity levels to ensure they fall within the appropriate range for the species you're keeping.

  • Handle your jumping spider with care, if necessary, and avoid stressing it unnecessarily. Remember that jumping spiders are delicate creatures
